International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD)
The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) was founded, in August 1924, as the International Committee of Silent Sports (CISS), in Paris, France, at a meeting that brought together the leaders of Sports for the deaf from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Romania. At this first meeting named the 1st chairman of the Committee, was appointed, Mr. Eugene Rubens-Alcais.
In 1955, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized ICSD as an “International Federation with Olympic standing.”
The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf is the entity responsible for the worldwide organization of all aspects regarding the Sport for the Deaf. It is responsible for supervising and coordinating Deaflympics world championships and sports for the deaf. Currently, 104 National Federations of Sports for the Deaf are part of the ICSD (International Committee of Sports for the Deaf) 104 National Federations of Sports for the Deaf.
To celebrate the spirit of sport for the deaf where Deaf athletes come together as members of a cultural and linguistic minority, the ICSD has adopted the motto PER LUDOS AEQUALITAS (Equality through sport).
